A night after walking off on a Marco Scutaro walk, the San Francisco Giants send out Barry Zito (4-8, 5.34 ERA).
It will be his 22nd start of season for the lefty, but his first since July 30 when he lasted just 3.1 inning against the Philadelphia Phillies. The veteran has made four appearances out of the bullpen since his last starting assignment. Zito is actually 4-1 with a 3.18 ERA at AT&T Park on the season.
Felix Doubrant (8-6, 3.95 ERA) gets the call for the Boston Red Sox in the final game of this three game set. The left-hander has made it through just four innings in his two most recent starts. None of the players in the lineup for the Giants have ever faced Doubrant, but Brandon Belt at first, and Roger Kieschnick in left fielder, are coming off 3-for-4 nights in game two of the series.
Before Scutaro’s effort last night, the Giants hadn’t won in that manner since 2003 when Marquis Grissom was issued a game-ending free pass. The club has now one four of its last six games.
Pablo Sandoval, who was scratched from the lineup in game two, also misses out for the finale of the series. The third baseman was available as a pinch hitter on Tuesday night, but he is replaced in today’s lineup by Joaquin Arias.
Petaluma native Jonny Gomes, who has yet to appear in the series, gets the start in left field and is batting fifth for the Red Sox. The 32-year-old Gomes played for the Oakland A’s in 2012.
