Day One 49ers Draft Prospects: Odell Beckham Jr.

This is the season for prospects to rise and fall on various analysts draft boards. The 2014 NFL Draft season is right around the corner. There have been numerous players associated with the San Francisco 49ers. Today we take a look at one of the many day one 49ers draft prospects. The 49ers have expressed interest in LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Beckham is a smooth route runner with elite athleticism. He is known for being a vertical threat but he can work all of the mid range routes as well. Beckham has very good catching ability and he understands how to climb the ladder to high point the ball. He brings an added value in the return game.

“I am a guy that will take the top off of a defense. I use a lot of my speed as my strength. I will give it my all on every single play whether it be receiver, returner, gunner on special teams I have that it factor. It can’t be taught. It’s something that was born in me.”

This is a player that is able to generate yards after the catch. Beckham also shows impressive burst in his routes. He can sink his hips to get in and out of his breaks. There is little doubt that he is a playmaker when he has the ball in his hands. Beckham uses his acceleration to pull away from defenders once he gets the ball.

How will he help the 49ers? Beckham would be a change of pace at the slot position for the 49ers. He has the shiftiness and elusiveness to give nickel corners nightmares. He can run the underneath routes very well due to his lateral quickness. Beckham can also stretch the field which is something that the 49ers need. Lastly, Beckham would give the 49ers the return threat that they are lacking.

NFL Comparison: Victor Cruz. Like Cruz, Beckham can be a vertical threat to defenses. They both are very good at getting yards after the catch. Cruz and Beckham give value in the return game and despite their size, they are very tough players.
