Fangio on Battle to Replace Bowman: ‘It’s a Pretty Even Competition’

Just who will be replacing NaVorro Bowman is yet to be decided.

“It’s a good competition,” said San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio of the derby to replace the all-pro inside linebacker. On Sunday, Fangio mentioned Michael Wilhoite, Chris Borland, Nick Moody and Shayne Skov, in order, as the players angling to claim that spot.

“Hopefully here at some point, somebody will separate themselves from the pack—make our decision easy.”

Fangio didn’t rule out the possibility that two players could share time at the position.

“Like I said, everything is open there. It could end up being two guys playing like it was at the outside backer position last year.”

Either way, there’s definitely still a job, or two to be won.

“It’s not close to being clear yet which way we’ll go or who we’ll go with. It’s a pretty even competition.”

Here’s a couple of videos of the team’s linebackers taking part in drills.
