For the final home series of the year, the Oakland A’s host the Minnesota Twins for the first time in 2013. Dan Straily (10-7, 4.11 ERA) takes the mound for the A’s, while the Twins send out Kevin Correia (9-12, 4.31 ERA) in the first of four games.
Straily has won four straight starts, which is one off career high five start win-streak he ran off earlier this season. The second year pitcher, who still qualifies as a rookie, leads all rookies in the AL with 113 strikeouts and 10 wins. The start against the Twins will be the right-hander’s first ever appearance against Minnesota.
Correia, who last faced Oakland as a member of the San Diego Padres in 2009, has won just twice since the All-Star Break. Yoenis Cespedes is a career .457 (16-for-35) with two home runs off the Twins, but the left fielder won’t be in the lineup in game one against Minnesota, as reported by Jane Lee of MLB.com:
Cespedes received a cortisone shot in shoulder after yesterday’s game. Melvin says he feels good today and could be back in lineup tomorrow.

Fellow outfielders Josh Reddick and Coco Crisp have also both received cortisone shots earlier in the season. Before game one with Twins, Melvin told reporters: “It wasn’t that bad. It was worse probably three days ago. It felt better the past couple of days. My feeling is, I’m not a doctor, I’m not a trainer, but this can potentially just be one day, even though he had it after the game yesterday.”
Seth Smith returns in the place of the sidelined Cespedes. The outfielder/DH has hit just .171 (14 for 82) since the All-Star Break. The left-handed hitter last started against the Twins last Wednesday at Target Field as Oakland beat down Minnesota 18-3.
“With Yoenis DH’ing, and not in the outfield, and [Daric] Barton here now too playing well, it’s taking away from his at-bats.
With Barton excelling, and Reddick rounding into form since returning from his second DL stint of the year, Smith could find himself on the outside looking in when the front office draws up the potential ALDS roster.
