After claiming game three of the series on Saturday night’s 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, the San Francisco Giants send out Ryan Vogelsong (2-4, 6.29 ERA) in the final game of the set.
The outing will be his 13th start of the season, and fourth since returning from DL. In his most recent start against the Boston Red Sox, the right-hander tossed seven innings and allowed two runs. He has now posted a 3.78 ERA since returning from injury.
Pittsburgh second baseman Neil Walker is 7-for-13 (.538) in his brief career of the right-hander and Garrett Jones is 5-for-11 (.455) with a home run. Vogelsong is 1-3 in five career starts against the Pirates, and in fives seasons with the AL Central club he went 10-19 with a 6.00 ERA.
With first pitch scheduled for 1:05p.m., the Pirates call on A.J. Burnett (6-8, 3.09 ERA).The veteran right-hander won his last outing as he went seven innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven.
Pablo Sandoval is a career .310 hitter (35-for-110) against the Pirates and 1-for-3 with a home run off Burnett. Brandon Belt, who bats cleanup, is hitting .346 (27-for-78) with five doubles, three triples and five home runs in the month of August.
On the season, the Giants are just 10-23 (.303) against the NL Central in 2013.
In his pregame interview manager Bruce Bochy said that both Jeremy Affeldt and Matt Cain would head to Arizona to continue their rehabs. The skipper said he expects Affeldt back sometime around the beginning of the month when the Giants travel to Petco Park to play a three-game series with the San Diego Padres.
Bochy noted the importance for the lefty of “finishing strong” heading into the offseason, and commented that there is “no throwing schedule” yet for the injured Cain.
With rookie Roger Kieschnick drawing the start in left field, Bochy said “we’ll use everybody” in the corner outfield spot. Bochy then smiled when describing Brett Pill’s defense in left as “a little bit of an adventure.” The tall first baseman and outfielder started in left last night.
Center fielder Angel Pagan will return on September 1 when rosters expand. Bochy said that the seven-year veteran played nine innings last night in a rehab game, and will get today off. The manager added that he is experiencing “no issues with his knee” and is just “getting back to baseball shape.”
On the couch in his office, Bochy had what appeared to be a large brown animal pelt. The manager explained that the Muskox skin had actually been purchased by former Giant Pat Burrell on a whim. The outfielder apparently had no use for the $10,000 pelt, and one day it showed up in Bochy’s office where it’s been ever since.
