Tommy Thompson has been called up to the under-20 national team, which is great news for the attacker. Of course, it’s not so great for the San Jose Earthquakes, who will now be without the 19-year-old for the game against the Portland Timbers on September 7 and the contest agaisnt the Vancouver Whitecaps on September 10.
Earlier this week at the team’s training facility, head coach Mark Watson was asked whether Thompson could ultimately factor into the equation for the next World Cup. While Watson din’t offer a direct answer, he also didn’t rule it out.
“I think we’ll just focus on what he’s been doing here. We’re really excited about his development. He just turned 19, you know, and I think for him, just focusing on what he’s doing everyday and doing well for us. I think if he keeps doing it, he’s got a lot of good stuff ahead of him.”
